Lead Engineer

About Multitudes

Kia ora and welcome to Multitudes! We’re on a mission to make tech equitable and inclusive – and we’re hiring!

Our product is an AI agent that not only enhances product delivery but also nurtures teams – by making sure everyone is getting the feedback they need, that work is distributed fairly, and giving visibility to the warning signs of burnout.

Our dedication extends beyond our product to how we operate. Every aspect of our team, from hiring practices to product development, is infused with our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. For one example, take a peek at our data ethics principles!

Our customers also represent the best software engineering teams in the world – from Honeycomb and Veho in the US, to Clara in Latin America and Octopus Deploy in Australia, and more. We’re continuously improving in our team practices, both as we learn from our customers and by dogfooding our own product. We’re in the company of great engineering teams, so we hold ourselves to an equally high bar in both our equitable practices and our technical competence.

We’re excited to announce our second raise, bringing us to ~$4M in funding. We’ve got incredible supporters, including Blackbird Ventures, Ellen Pao (of Reddit, Project Include), Jon Williams and Doug English (co-founders of Culture Amp), Vaughan Fergusson (founder of Vend, now Lightspeed), and more. With this support, we're excited to expand our team and embark on the next chapter of our product journey.

About the opportunity: Lead Engineer

You will play a pivotal role by leading delivery, managing our engineering team, and contributing to the codebase. This is an opportunity for someone who wants to have a big role in shaping both our product and our team – you’re a human-centric leader who takes pride in building excellent products and delivering them well.

What a typical week might look like:

  • Meet with Lauren (our founder) and the Lead Designer (who we’re hiring now) to provide your input on a new feature
  • Jump into a call with one of our key customers to diagnose and solve a particularly thorny bug in our Jira integration
  • Jump onto a call with Jenny and Vivek, our data team, to chat about the R&D roadmap and upcoming architecture needs for our AI/ML roadmap
  • Work closely with Emily, our Staff Engineer, to design the architecture for the next feature, which is supporting teams to take action from retros
  • Mentor and coach Emily and Hazel on their own growth and development goals – you’ll be their line manager
  • Catch a roadblock in the feature we’re currently building, figure out what that means for our launch date, and then communicate that to Lauren and our content marketer (hiring soon!) to figure out how to balance the technical timeline with external launch needs
  • Meet with potential candidates for a new software engineering role
  • Throughout all of this, live our values

We are Node.js fullstack, with React on the frontend and Typescript APIs on the backend. Our data pipelines are python-based.

This role has the potential to scale as our company grows.

Core skills

Required
  • Experience in leading engineering delivery
  • The ability to communicate clearly with different stakeholders about technical limitations, business priorities, and the trade-offs of different pathways
  • Experience in building Javascript-based web applications (React, Typescript, Node, etc.)
  • Excitement about the challenge and fast pace of a startup
Nice to have
  • Interest in leveraging new technologies and advances in AI/ML for our product
  • Experience in developing dashboards, particularly for analytics and/or graphical purposes
  • Experience with technical architecture, including designing scalable and reliable systems
  • Experience with data engineering workload and concepts

What we provide

  • Supportive working environment with remote & flexible work options
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion – both in how we work as a team and in our product development practices
  • Opportunity to be part of an impact-led, fast-paced startup
  • Compensation includes $120-160K salary plus a meaningful equity share in Multitudes
  • Occasional board games!

If this sounds like the kind of thing you enjoy, even if you haven’t done this role before, we encourage you to apply! You’ll get support from Lauren and we’ll connect you to experienced engineering leaders (we have a lot of amazing ones in our network!) to support you to grow into the role.

In addition, we are committed to building a diverse and inclusive team; we cannot succeed in our mission without it. People from marginalized groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Note that this is a New Zealand/Australia-based role – because that's where the rest of the team is!
